Postgraduate Nursing Intensive Care: Master of Nursing Practice (Intensive Care) – Deakin (2022)

Do you want to commence your Intensive Care nursing career in a supportive, collaborative environment where you will receive diverse exposure to a range of clinical conditions and management of complex patients?  St. Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne ICU, Department of Critical Care Medicine is seeking enthusiastic, passionate & dedicated Registered Nurses wishing to join our team. Opportunities exist for the 2022 intake of the Postgraduate Intensive Care stream. You will be supported to learn in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment, where you will receive diverse exposure to a range of complex patient presentations & clinical conditions.

Commencement date

Successful candidates will commence 7th February 2022.

(1 year contract to achieve Graduate Certificate level qualification)


Department of Critical Care Medicine (DCCM), Building A, Level 1 IPS building, St. Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne.

Selection criteria

·    Applicants must hold current registration with AHPRHA as a Registered Nurse without conditions.

·    Applicants must have completed a minimum of 2 years nursing practice working in an acute care setting (inclusive of graduate nurse year).

·    Applicants must have a minimum total of 1 year clinical nursing experience in an acute care area (eg. medical, surgical, high dependency, cardiac unit, emergency dept. – discuss this with us).

·    Applicants must meet the AHPRA standard on English language skills and have basic computer skills.

·    Applicants must be willing to undergo a National Police Record Check prior to commencement of the program.

·     Applicants must be an Australian citizen or have permanent residency.

·     Applicants must have professional indemnity insurance.

About the Department

The Department of Critical Care Medicine (DCCM) at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne (SVHM) is a 19 bed environment (15 ICU + 4 HDU) caring for patients requiring critical care. It accommodates elective and emergency surgical and medical patients.

The DCCM admits deteriorating patients from the ward environment, Operating Theatre, Emergency Department plus external admissions from other metropolitan and rural hospitals via Adult Retrieval Victoria (ARV).

Postgraduate nursing student’s clinical requirements for the Master of Nursing Practice – Intensive Care (Deakin) are completed at SVHM DCCM. Students are supported in providing one to one care to patients with a range of different requirements including; advanced haemodynamic monitoring, management of vasoactive and inotropic drugs, temporary pacing, external ventricular drains / Codman’s, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP), Non Invasive Ventilation (NIV), mechanical ventilation support and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapies (CRRT). 

About the Program

·         SVHM DCCM is in partnership with Deakin University (Burwood).

·         To participate in this program applicants must be successful in gaining employment at SVHM DCCM to complete the clinical requirements.

·         The SVHM DCCM contract will be 0.8 EFT for a fixed 12month period.

·         Successful candidates are then required to enrol into the Masters of Nursing Practice – Intensive Care with Deakin University (Burwood) to complete the academic requirements.

·         To fulfil the employment contract with SVHM DCCM students must be enrolled in the Master of Nursing Practice – Intensive Care with Deakin University (Burwood) for the full 1 year period.

·         Post successful completion of the Postgraduate year potential ongoing employment opportunities within the DCCM ICU will be discussed.
